Types of Media

Growing up in the age of social media allowed me to entertain myself in different ways other than traditional media. One of these new outlets was YouTube, a platform to upload longer form videos about anything and everything you wanted. During this time, I believe a big shift happened in the media space for younger audiences which was vlogs. Chapter 12 of the textbook states that vlogs are simply blogs in a video format, but they are also so much more.
When I was a kid, I was fascinated by the new social media influencers and the vlogs they created about their life. I wanted to be like them, live like them. and work as they did. The textbook also mentions people like Casey Neistat, in which I was a huge fan of back in the day. He would take you through his everyday life which consisted of traveling through New York City, reviewing products, or simply spending time with his family. This new format of media opened the gate to new ways of marketing such as reviewing a product, engaging directly with consumers, and increasing awareness for a certain idea.
Now vlogs are just one way of marketing a brand, there are many other ways such as podcasts, webinars, and obviously blogs. The textbook also talks about the future of these forms of media, with events such as Covid-19 fueling new mediums of digital marketing as everything was pushed online. The audience for these types of media is only going to increase, so the future of blogs, vlogs, and podcasts is very bright.
